stapedectomy (sta″pә-dekĀ“tә-me)   surgical removal of the stapes, which is then replaced with a prosthetic device composed of stainless steel, Teflon, or a similar substance. This is done for relief of conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis of the ossicles of the middle ear. Replacement of the fixed stapes with a device capable of vibrating allows transmission of sound waves from the outer ear to the inner ear so that hearing is restored.
