stapedectomy
(sta″pә-dek´tә-me)
surgical removal of the stapes, which is then replaced with a prosthetic device composed of stainless steel, Teflon, or a similar substance. This is done
for relief of conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis of the ossicles of the middle ear. Replacement of the fixed stapes with a device capable of vibrating allows transmission of sound waves from the outer ear to the inner ear so that hearing is restored.
