Staphylococcus
(staf″ә-lo-kok´әs)
a genus of gram-positive bacteria made up of spherical microorganisms, usually in grapelike clusters; they are constantly
present on the skin and in the upper respiratory tract and are the most common cause of localized suppurating infections.
Species that cause disease in humans include S. au´reus, S. epider´midis, and S. saprophy´ticus.
