  excessive effort or exercise.
  an overstretching or overexertion of some part of the musculature.
  to filter or separate.
  a group of organisms within a species or variety, characterized by some particular quality, as rough or smooth strains of bacteria.
 

wild-type strain  the strain used as a standard for a given species or variety of organism, usually presumed to be the type found in nature. See also wild type.
