stress (stres) forcibly exerted influence; pressure. in dentistry, the pressure of the upper teeth against the lower. a state of physiological or psychological strain caused by adverse stimuli (physical, mental, or emotional, internal or external), that tend to disturb the functioning of an organism and which the organism naturally desires to avoid. Stress reactions are elicited, but if they are inappropriate or inadequate they may lead to disease states. a stimulus that causes such a state or stress reaction. cold stress

the complications seen when persons undergo muscular exertion in conditions of excessive heat, such as when sweating does not cool off the body enough, or when heavy sweating depletes the body's supply of fluids and electrolytes.
