In general, the term has been used to refer to disorders in which the symptoms are distressing to the person, but reality testing does not yield unusual results, behavior is not outside the socially acceptable, and there is no apparent physical condition to cause it. Disorders that used to be called neuroses are now classified as anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, mood disorders, sexual disorders, and somatoform disorders.

hysterical neurosis  old name for a group of mental disorders that have now been divided into conversion disorder and the dissociative disorders.

transference neurosis  a term sometimes used in psychoanalysis for a situation in which the patient transfers onto the analyst, and partly reexperiences, childhood conflicts, impulses, feelings, and fantasies that were originally directed toward a parent.
