nucleolus (noo-kleĀ“ә-lәs″) a rounded refractile body in the nucleus of most cells, which is the site of synthesis of ribosomal RNA, becoming enlarged during periods of synthesis and smaller during quiescent periods; multiple nucleoli occur in some cells.
