pancreatitis (pan″kre-ә-tiĀ“tis) inflammation of the pancreas, which may be acute or chronic and is often complicated by autodigestion of pancreatic tissue by its own enzymes. The most common causes are complications from alcoholism and biliary tract conditions such as gallstones.
