peritonitis (per″ĭ-to-niĀ“tis) inflammation of the peritoneum, which may be either acute or chronic. In acute types, there is immediate and intense pain at the site of infection, usually with fever, vomiting, and extreme weakness, and the abdomen becomes rigid and sensitive to the touch.
