phagocyte (fa´go-sīt) any cell capable of ingesting particulate matter, usually referring to a microphage, macrophage, or monocyte. They ingest microorganisms and other particulate antigens that are coated with antibody or complement (opsonized), a process mediated by specific cell-surface receptors.
