pleurisy
(ploor´ĭ-se)
inflammation of the pleura; the two common types are fibrinous pleurisy and pleurisy with effusion. The cause may be an infection, injury, or tumor; or it may be a complication of a lung disease such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, a lung abscess, or influenza. Symptoms are cough, fever, chills, sharp pain that is worse on inhalation, and rapid shallow breathing. Called also pleuritis. adj., pleurit´ic., adj.
