dermatophyte (durīmә-to-fīt″) a fungus parasitic upon the skin or its appendages; those preferring humans are called anthropophilic and those preferring other animals are called zoophilic. Particularly serious infections may occur in immunocompromised persons. The genera considered to contain dermophytic species are Microsporum, Epidermophyton, and Trichophyton. Called also cutaneous fungus.
