epoetin
(e-po´ә-tin)
a form of human erythropoietin produced by recombinant technology, having the same mechanism of action as endogenous erythropoietin. Used in treatment of anemia from various causes, including chronic renal failure, zidovudine therapy, and cancer chemotherapy; also used prior to surgery in anemic patients to reduce the need for blood transfusion. Administered intravenously or subcutaneously.
It is available in two forms, designated epoetin alfa (the form used in the United States) and epoetin beta (used in various other countries). Called also recombinant human erythropoietin
