erysipelas (er″ә-sip´ә-lәs)   an acute, contagious form of cellulitis caused by infection with Group A hemolytic streptococci. The visible symptoms are round or oval patches on the skin that enlarge, spread, and become swollen, tender, and red. Affected skin is hot to the touch, and adjacent skin may form blisters. Headache, vomiting, fever, and sometimes complete prostration can occur. Adj., erysipes´atous., adj.
 

coast erysipelas  a cutaneous manifestation of onchocerciasis seen in Central America, not related to the erysipelas caused by streptococci.
