escharotomy (es″kә-rot´ә-me) surgical incision of the eschar and superficial fascia of the chest or a circumferentially burned limb in order to allow cut edges to separate so that blood flow is restored to unburned tissue; this is because edema may form beneath the inelastic eschar of a full-thickness burn, compressing arteries and impairing blood flow.
