intracellular fluid
any fluid that is within the membranes of the cells of the body; this comprises about two thirds of the total body fluids. It serves as a medium for the basic materials needed by cells for growth, repair, and performance of other functions. Intracellular
fluid contains relatively large amounts of positively charged potassium ions and smaller amounts of sodium ions, in contrast
to extracellular fluid. See also fluid balance.
