cell
(sel)
a small more or less enclosed space.
the basic structural unit of living organisms. All living cells arise from other cells, either by division of one cell to make two, as in mitosis and meiosis, or by fusion of two cells to make one, as in the union of the spermatozoon and the oocyte to make the zygote in sexual reproduction. Each cell is bounded by a plasma membrane consisting of two layers of phospholipids. Cells are divided into two classes, the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, depending on whether they do or do not have a true cell nucleus. adj., celīlular., adj.
