cerebellum (ser″ә-belīәm) the part of the metencephalon (midbrain) located behind the brainstem, to which it is attached by three peduncles on each side (the cerebellar peduncles); it consists of a median lobe (vermis) and two lateral lobes (the cerebellar hemispheres). The cerebellum has connections through the midbrain to the motor area of the cerebral cortex, and downward with the spinal cord and the semicircular canals of the inner ear. The function of the cerebellum is apparently to blend and coordinate motion of the various muscles involved in voluntary movements; when it is injured, a person's movements become jerky and uncoordinated.
