T lymphocytes lymphocytes that originate from a stem cell in blood-forming tissue and undergo differentiation in the thymus when triggered by thymopoietin. When activated by antigens such as the CD4 antigen or the CD8 antigen, T lymphocytes differentiate into the various types of regulatory and effector T cells; see CD4 cells and CD8 cells. Subtypes in those two groups include amplifier T lymphocytes, cytotoxic T lymphocytes, and suppressor T cells. Called also T cells.
