What this drug is used for

All these dextromethorphan-based liquids--typically labeled "adult formula," "extra strength," or "maximum strength," contain a relatively high dose of the active ingredient. They provide temporary relief of cough due to sore throat or irritated bronchial tubes, as brought on by the common cold.

Many of these products are also available in a weaker strength, usually labeled "pediatric" or "children's strength" (see Benylin Pediatric Cough Suppressant). Dextromethorphan is also available in liquid gelcaps (see DexAlone Cough Caps).

How should you take this medication?

These medications may be taken every 6 to 8 hours, up to a maximum of 4 doses each 24 hours (every 12 hours for Delsym, with a 2-dose daily maximum).

* ADULTS

For adults and children 12 years and over, the usual dose is 2 teaspoonfuls (3 teaspoonfuls for Robitussin Honey Cough and Vicks 44).

* CHILDREN

Age 6 to 12

The usual dose is 1 teaspoonful (1-1/2 teaspoonfuls for Robitussin Honey Cough and Vicks 44).

Age 2 to 6

The usual dose is half a teaspoonful (for Pertussin DM and Vicks 44, consult your doctor). Robitussin Honey Cough is not recommended for children under 6.

Store at room temperature.

Do not take this medication if...

Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, do not use these products for cough due to smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or for coughs that bring up a lot of phlegm.

Special warnings about this medication

A persistent cough may be a sign of a serious illness. If you have a cough that lasts for more than 1 week, goes away and comes back, or is accompanied by a fever, rash, or long-lasting headache, call your doctor.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

Do not use any of these products within 2 weeks of taking a drug classified as an MAO inhibitor, including the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate.
