What this drug is used for

These "pediatric" products contain less of the active ingredient dextromethorphan than do the "adult-," "extra-," and "maximum-strength" formulations (see Benylin Adult Formula Cough Suppressant). All dextromethorphan products provide temporary relief of cough due to sore throat or irritated bronchial tubes, as brought on by the common cold.

How should you take this medication?

These products may be given every 6 to 8 hours, up to a maximum of 4 doses each 24 hours (every 4 hours for Pertussin CS, with a 6-dose maximum).

* ADULTS

For adults and children 12 years and over, the usual dose of Benylin, Pertussin, and Robitussin is 4 teaspoonfuls. Triaminic has no adult dosage guidelines.

* CHILDREN

Age 6 to 12

The usual dose is 2 teaspoonfuls or tablets.

Age 2 to 6

The usual dose is 1 teaspoonful or tablet.

* STORAGE

Store at room temperature.

Do not take this medication if...

Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, do not use these products for cough due to smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or for coughs that bring up a lot of phlegm. Avoid them if they've ever given you an allergic reaction.

Special warnings about this medication

A persistent cough may be a sign of a serious illness. If a cough lasts for more than 1 week, goes away and comes back, or is accompanied by a fever, rash, or long-lasting headache, call your doctor.

If your child must avoid phenylalanine, do not use the Triaminic Softchews Cough product, which contains this substance.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

Do not use any of these products within 2 weeks of taking a drug classified as an MAO inhibitor, including the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate.
