What this drug is used for

Doan's Analgesic Caplets and the similar product, Backache Caplets, provide temporary relief from minor backache pain.

Doan's Caplets are available in regular and extra strengths. Backache Caplets are equivalent to the extra-strength variety of Doan's.

How should you take this medication?

Drink a full glass of water with each dose. For children under 12, consult your doctor.

* REGULAR STRENGTH DOAN'S

The usual dose is 2 caplets every 4 hours. Do not take more than 12 caplets in 24 hours.

* EXTRA STRENGTH DOAN'S AND BACKACHE CAPLETS

The usual dose is 2 caplets every 6 hours. Do not take more than 8 caplets in 24 hours.

* STORAGE

Store at room temperature. Keep the product dry.

Do not take this medication if...

Unless your doctor approves, do not take Doan's if you are allergic to aspirin and other salicylates, or if you have asthma, ulcers, bleeding problems, or stomach complaints--heartburn, upset stomach, or stomach pain--that fail to get better or keep coming back.

Special warnings about this medication

Salicylates such as the active ingredient in these products have been known to trigger a serious illness called Reye's syndrome in children and teenagers who catch a virus. If your child gets chickenpox or flu, do not treat the symptoms with Doan's.

If you develop ringing in the ears or notice a loss of hearing, stop taking this medicine and call your doctor.

Do not take either of these products for more than 10 days for pain or 3 days for fever, unless your doctor recommends. Call your doctor if you develop new symptoms, your pain or fever continues or gets worse, or you notice redness and swelling. These could be signs of a serious condition.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

Check with your doctor before combining these products with any of the following:

Anti-gout drugs such as Anturane, Benemid, and Zyloprim
Arthritis preparations such as Aleve, Anaprox, Ecotrin, Indocin,
Motrin, Naprosyn, and Orudis
Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin
Diabetes medications, including DiaBeta, Diabinese, Micronase,
and Glucotrol
