What this drug is used for

Pamprin Maximum Cramp Relief eases menstrual cramps, tension, and other pains associated with your period, such as backache, muscles aches, and headache. It also contains a diuretic to get rid of the retained water that leads to bloating and temporary weight gain.

Another form of Pamprin-- Pamprin Multi-Symptom--combats the same symptoms, but has a slightly different mix of ingredients.

How should you take this medication?

The usual dose is 2 pills with a full glass of water every 4 to 6 hours, as needed. Do not take more than 8 caplets each 24 hours.

Do not take this medication if...

Unless your doctor approves, avoid this product if you are allergic to salicylates such as aspirin. Never give this medication to a child under 3 years of age.

Special warnings about this medication

Check with your doctor before using Pamprin if you have more than 3 alcoholic drinks every day. The acetaminophen and magnesium salicylate in this product are capable of causing liver damage.

Stop using this product and check with your doctor if pain or fever continues for more than 10 days; it could signal a serious problem.

If you develop ringing in the ears or have trouble hearing, check with your doctor before taking any more of this product.

During pregnancy, and when nursing a baby, check with your doctor before using products such as Pamprin.

This product may make you sleepy. Alcohol, sleep aids, and tranquilizers make the problem more likely. Be especially careful when driving and when operating machinery.

Pamprin may also cause excitability, especially in children.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

Unless directed by a doctor, do not take Pamprin if you are using any of the following:

Blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin
Diabetes drugs such as DiaBeta, Orinase, and Tolinase
Gout medicines such as Anturane, Benemid, and Zyloprim
Arthritis medications such as Anaprox, Daypro, Ecotrin, Indocin, Motrin, and Naprosyn
