Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis is a sinus problem that persists or recurs and is often caused by long-standing allergies, anatomical obstructions such as polyps, or exposure to irritants such as smoke.

The Effects of Chronic Sinusitis
Constant exposure to substances such as pollen, smoke, and chemical fumes can cause persistent inflammation of the mucosal lining of the nasal and sinus cavities. Cilia can become permanently damaged making it more difficult for mucus to drain from the sinuses. The symptoms of chronic sinusitis are generally mild; headache and sinus pain are less severe and because there is usually no upper respiratory infection, fever and fatigue are uncommon. However, nasal congestion with some pressure and annoying postnasal drip are symptoms of chronic sinusitis.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of chronic sinusitis is usually made on the basis of a medical history. Examination, x-rays, or CT scan help to reveal thickened mucosa, blocked sinus openings, and obstructions such as a deviated septum, polyps, and inflamed turbinates that can interfere with drainage.

Treatment
Your doctor may prescribe medications to treat your chronic sinusitis. He or she may also recommend an allergy control program for long-term management. In some cases, nasal and/or sinus surgery may be needed to improve sinus drainage or to remove nasal obstructions.
