Reading Food Labels
Reading nutrition labels can help you choose healthier foods. You can start by comparing foods you already buy. Choose those that are lowest in fat, salt, and sugar and highest in fiber.

Ask yourself the questions below about each food you compare. Also check that the serving size is what you'll really eat.

Which is lowest in fat?
The less fat the better. Choose the one that has the fewest calories from fat. Also look for the fewest grams (g) of saturated fat.


Which has the least salt?
The lower the milligrams (mg) and the percent of daily sodium, the better.

Which has the most fiber?
The higher the grams (g) and percent of dietary fiber, the better.

Which has the least sugar?
The fewer grams (g) of sugar, the better.
