Your Health at Risk
High blood pressure usually doesn't cause symptoms. So, you may not feel sick at all. But that doesn't mean that high blood pressure isn't something to worry about. Even if you feel fine, high blood pressure can be working behind the scenes to rob you of your good health.

What Is High Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force that the heart creates as it pumps blood. High blood pressure (also called hypertension) means the heart works too hard to push blood through the body. This extra work can damage both the heart and blood vessels. It can lead to serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, blindness, and kidney failure. But treatment can help lower your blood pressure to prevent these problems.

Your Treatment Plan
High blood pressure is a chronic health condition. This means it will never go away completely. But you and your doctor can plan treatment to keep your blood pressure under control. Following this plan day in and day out is not always easy. In fact, more than half the people being treated for high blood pressure don't follow their plan well enough to keep their blood pressure under control. But you don't have to be one of them. This booklet can help you learn some of the skills you need to make your plan work for you.
