Find Your Barriers To Change

These are some of the most common barriers to change. Do any of these "excuses" sound like you?
  • "It's someone else's fault that I am the way I am."

  • "It's too late to change."

  • "I'll do it later."

  • "I've got to give up the things I love."
Instead, try approaching lifestyle changes with the following thoughts:
  • "Wellness means taking responsibility for my own health."

  • "I can improve the quality of my life no matter what my age."

  • "I'll begin making healthy changes today."

  • "I will focus on being more optimistic."

Making Changes

Try some of these suggestions in making your wellness lifestyle changes.
  • Divide changes into a number of small steps.

  • Set goals that are specific, measurable, and rewarding. Set milestones or "mini-goals" and keep track of your progress. Reward yourself when you reach goals.

  • Find a "wellness buddy" who can support you.

  • Spend time with people who have healthy lifestyles.

  • Each day, list three things you can and will do to reach your goal.

  • Change things around you to support your health goals. For example, make an exercise area in your house.

  • Keep your sense of humor.
