Exercise
Exercise helps lower your blood sugar. It does this by helping your body use insulin. Exercise also helps you control your weight.
  • Your health care team will work with you to plan an exercise program that's best for you.
  • Your exercise program will be based on what shape you are in and what you like to do.

Take Medication If Needed
Even if you eat right, exercise, and control your weight, you may still need diabetes medication. But if you do, your doctor will prescribe the kind that's best for you.
  • You may take pills. Or you may give yourself injections (shots).
  • If you take medication, you still need to eat right, exercise, and control your weight.

Take Care of Yourself
With diabetes, you are more likely to get other health problems. These include foot, eye, heart, and kidney problems.
  • Your health care team will tell you how to care for yourself to help prevent these problems.
  • You need to have regular medical checkups, including eye and foot exams and blood tests.
