Talk to Your Doctor
No test can confirm the presence of IBS. But your doctor may order tests to rule out any underlying problem that may be causing symptoms similar to IBS.

Your Evaluation and Tests
Your doctor may ask you about your symptoms, what kinds of foods you eat, and possible sources of stress in your life, among other things. A sample of your stool may be tested for blood or bacteria. Your bowel may also be examined with a procedure called colonoscopy.

Facts About IBS

  • IBS is not cancer, and it doesn’t cause cancer.
  • Even though emotional stress can make IBS worse, IBS is not “in your head.”
  • IBS is not inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. These conditions involve changes in the form (structure) of the bowel. IBS only involves changes in the working (function) of the bowel.
