What this drug is used for

Doxidan and similar products combine a laxative to relieve constipation and a stool softener to ease bowel movements.

Doxidan and Fleet Sof-Lax Overnight come in gelcap form. Peri-Colace is available in capsules and syrup.

How should you take this medication?

* DOXIDAN

Adults

The usual dose for adults and children 12 years and over is 1 to 3 pills in a single dose, once a day.

Children

For children 2 to 12, the usual dose is 1 pill a day. For children under 2, consult your doctor.

* FLEET SOF-LAX OVERNIGHT

Adults

The usual dose for adults and children 12 years and over is 1 or 2 pills daily at bedtime.

Children

For children 6 to 12, the usual dose is 1 pill a day.

* PERI-COLACE

Adults

The usual dose is 1 or 2 capsules or tablespoonfuls of syrup at bedtime. For severe constipation, you can take 2 capsules or tablespoonfuls twice a day, or take 3 capsules at bedtime.

Children

The usual dose is 1 to 3 teaspoonfuls of syrup at bedtime. To avoid throat irritation, mix the syrup into 6 to 8 ounces of milk or fruit juice, or add it to infant formula.

* STORAGE

May be stored at room temperature.

Do not take this medication if...

Unless your doctor approves, do not use this medicine if you have abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. If you have noticed a sudden change in bowel habits lasting for 2 weeks or longer, check with your doctor before using any laxative.

Special warnings about this medication

Stop using this medicine and call your doctor if you develop rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after taking the medicine. You might have a serious condition.

Side effects of this medicine are rare, but may include nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and rash.

Used too often or too long, laxatives can become habit-forming. Do not use any laxative for more than a week without your doctor's approval.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

Unless your doctor directs, do not use these products if you are taking mineral oil.
