What this drug is used for

Formerly available only by prescription, the medication in these products both relieves and prevents symptoms of allergies such as hay fever. It works by blocking certain cells in the body from releasing substances that make the bronchial tubes tighten and constrict. It combats symptoms such as sneezing and runny, itchy, stuffy nose.

Unlike nonprescription antihistamines, this medication does not cause drowsiness. It comes in a nasal spray bottle.

How should you take this medication?

For adults and children 2 years and older, the usual dosage is 1 spray in each nostril every 4 to 6 hours, up to a maximum of 6 times a day.

This medication should be used daily as long as you are in contact with the cause of your allergy. It may be several days before you notice an effect, and 1 to 2 weeks before the effect reaches its peak. To prevent allergy symptoms, begin using the medication as much as a week before you expect to encounter the cause.

Use the pump spray as follows:

  1. Blow your nose.
  2. Hold the pump with your thumb at the bottom and the nozzle between your fingers. (The first time you use the pump, or after not using it for 14 days, spray into the air until a fine mist appears.)
  3. Insert the nozzle into a nostril and spray upward while breathing in through the nose.
