What this drug is used for

These products provide short-term relief of stuffy nose due to the common cold, inflamed sinuses, or allergies such as hay fever.

Most of these products are nasal sprays. Neo-Synephrine also offers nasal drops, and comes in three strengths: mild, regular, and extra. Vicks Sinex is also available as an ultra-fine mist.

How should you take this medication?

The usual dose is 2 or 3 sprays or drops in each nostril every 4 hours. Neo-Synephrine Mild formula and Afrin Nasal Decongestant Children's can be given to children 6 years and over. With all other formulations, consult a doctor for children under 12.

Spray quickly and firmly into the nostril and inhale deeply. Do not tilt the head backward while spraying. Wipe the nozzle clean after each use. Do not use more often than every 4 hours.

When using pump sprays such as Vicks Sinex Ultra Fine Mist for the first time, you'll need to prime the pump by firmly depressing its rim several times. Then hold the container with your thumb at the base and the nozzle between your first and second fingers, insert the nozzle into your nostril, and spray.
